ArchivalResource

Correspondence of the King and Leftwich families, 1844-1867.

The collection consists chiefly of the correspondence of William King and his wife Annie D Leftwich King, concerning camp and battle experiences as a Confederate artilleryman in Virginia campaigns 1861-1862. Topics include Latham's Battery; an engagement near Centreville, December 18, 1861; death of his brother; and Charles Scott's salt works in Washington County, Va.; and the possibility of guerilla warfare after the end of hostilities. He mentions Generals P.T.G. Beaurregard, Philip St. George Cocke, Jubal Early, John Echols, William H. King, and James Longstreet. Of interest is a letter 1864 January 30 describing desperate conditions in Greenville, Tennessee, where King is trying to sell a train load of salt. He mentions smallpox in the Union Army, bushwhacking by deserters from both armies, and General Longstreet's advance. In addition the collection contains three letters from John Ramage, 1848-1850, concerning the saltworks; Confederate money from Virginia and North Carolina; a map of the British Isles and Europe; and a printed sketch of the Irish emigrant William King.
